  • Self-test:

    (link to:) Prusa Self-Test instructions

    • This is the first thing to do after assembly and pre-flight checks (pintle height adjustment) are done.
    • After some dinking around, got it to pass self-check (first attempt failed because I had the printer too close to the wall and the heatbed cord pushed against the wall and Y-axis calibration failed).
  • XYZ Calibration:
  • (link to:) Prusa XYZ Calibration instructions

    • A question on what type of sheet I have, whether "smooth PEI" or "powder coated." As I recall I ordered smooth PEI because there was extra lead-time for powder coated. It's not relevant to the procedure, just want to completely document my process.
  • First Layer Calibration:
  • (link to:) Prusa First Layer Calibration

    • Mount filament spool onto printer.
    • Clean the bed.
    • (go to:) Load filament:
    • Initiate the first layer calibration:
menu > Calibration > First Layer
select "Yes" to confirm proper filament type is loaded
    • bed pre-heat will start, then printing will start
When the print starts, a new menu will appear: Adjusting Z
turn knob CCW (increase Z-minus adjust - ie. make it more negative) to get more "squish" on the bed
Live-Z: more negative = more squish

See instructions if you need to lower it below -2.000mm

    • if it doesn't work, that is, the layer is not squished correctly, repeat First layer calibration:
      • press & hold knob. rotate knob CW to raise z to have clear access to bed
      • let bed cool, then clean off deposited filament, re-clean with IPA (or whatever cleaner/solvent depending on filament type) if necessary
      • menu > Preheat > select filament type being loaded
      • when ready:
menu > Calibration > First layer cal.
        is [proper filament] loaded? Yes
      • when heating is done, First layer cal. proceeds
      • when calibration is done and screen says Adjusting Z,
turn knob CCW to increase Z-minus distance (increasing "squish")
      • when done, inspect for proper squish. If still not enough, repeat
    • if everything worked, proceed to print your part.
