Dell 4400 laptop: HDMI output to remote monitor

The Dell Precision laptop does not have an HDMI output. Instead it has a DB-15 VGA output.
An adapter to convert VGA to HDMI is necessary:

This adapter has a USB cable, and must be powered via USB to work.
VGA output does not include audio, but HDMI does. So the adapter has a 1/8" audio cable that needs to be plugged into the headphone output of the computer.

Once inserted into the Dell VGA port, and the USB cable plugged in, and the HDMI output attached to a remote monitor,
press Fn-F8 on the Dell. Much flashing happens, and though I didn't wait to see how long it would continue, I pressed Fn-F8 a second time, and the output to the monitor stabilized.
