Linux: Fresh Install Mint 20 Cinammon

  • Download: (link to:) linuxmint.com/download
    • Click the download link for the desktop version you prefer. I picked Cinnamon
    • Read the Release notes and Announcement
    • Select a download mirror site, click Save File, and OK.
    • Browse to your desired destination and click Save
  • verify ISO: (link to:) linuxmint.com/verify
    (go to:) Verify ISO
    • Click the big green button for the release you downloaded
    • Preparation:
    • Integrity Check:
    • Authenticity Check
  • Create bootable USB stick:

  • Boot your laptop with your new USB stick:
    • With your laptop running Linux, insert the new USB stick
        On Precision 4600, you must use the left rear USB port.

      In "Ask what to do" field, click drop-down arrow, select Do Nothing, click OK

    • Restart your laptop:
      Linux Mint menu, select power button icon, click Restart
      • for Linux 20:
        When Precision logo appears, boot options key will be shown in upper right corner of screen
        Press F12
        Arrow key to select boot from USB device
        select linux mint
        It should start Linux 20
          If problems, press F12 on bootup to open the boot menu.
      • for Linux 21:
        menu comes up
        select start linux mint 21
  • Install Linux:
    • At this point, you are running your computer with Linux from your USB stick. If you want to install Linux so it will boot directly without using the USB stick, do this:
    • On your desktop there will be an icon labeled "Install Linux". ("Install Linux Mint" for 21) Double-click it and follow the prompts.
      • If install linux icon is not there, but instead an icon labeled: "Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon 64-bit",
        then you may have booted from your existing install instead of from the USB stick.
      • Select "I don't want to connect to a wifi network right now"
      • Do not select multimedia codecs
      • (if desired) select "Erase disk and install Linux Mint
      • (if desired) select "Encrypt Home folder"
  • Restore Environment:
