- Accelerometers are semiconductor devices that measure acceleration (rate of change in velocity). If an accelerometer is moved, that is, given some velocity in some direction, the change in velocity (it's acceleration) is measured.
- They are frequently configured to sense movement in several axes simultaneously.
- The MPU-6050 eg. senses movement in all 3 (x, y, & z) axes, plus gyroscopic movement in 3 axes, giving 6 degrees-of-freedom sensing.
(no clue at the moment what/how the gyro function works)
- Accelerometers with appropriate software are used to monitor/track position as the accelerometer is moved.
