Linux Menu > Software Manager
enter "GIMP" in search bar
Select first item (Not the Flatpack)
click Install (green button, top right)
enter your login password when prompted, click Authenticate
When installation finishes, you can launch directly from the Software Manager window,
or, from Linux Menu > Graphics, and select GNU Image Manipulation Program
The first time it runs, it will do some additional setup/config stuff
However:
This didn't work on my installation of Linux Mint 20.2. Attempting to install from Software manager failed for unresolvable dependency error.
So I did this method instead:
Open GIMP:
from Linux home screen, open menu
Graphics, then click on GIMP Image Editor
Open an existing file:
navigate to file location, double-click it
Save an edited file:
File (top menu bar) Export As ...
select Image type, eg. jpg
enter desired filename and location
export, export
Restore Missing Toolbox:
Windows - Recently Closed Docks - Toolbox
Note:
After performing many functions, draw, copy, paste, etc.,
there will still be a dotted line around the selection you were operating on.
This is a "floating selection."
To clear it, anchor it to your image layer (or wherever else you want it)
with Layer > Anchor Layer
