  • Desktops are the UI that you see when you use the computer.
  • For my installations of Linux Mint, I have always used Cinnamon, though I have experimented with xfce, supposedly "lighter" and faster. My experience however did not track those promises, so i went back to Cinnamon.

  • When you go to the Linux download site, you'll see options to select whichever desktop environment ("DE") you want.
  • However there are commands that let you download a different DE without doing a complete install, then procedures to switch between them as you desire.

  • Make a shortcut on desktop to a folder :
    • in file manager:
      Edit (top menu bar) --> Preferences --> Context Menus
      in Selection block, click checkbox for "Make Link"
      Close Edit Preferences window
    • Browse to directory that contains the folder you want to link to.
      Left click to selct the folder
      Right click, select Make Link
      Link will be created in the same directory
    • Drag/drop new link to the desktop
