  • Followed these instructions:

    $ sudo apt install docker docker-compose docker-doc docker-registry docker.io
    $ docker --version ... reported 24.0.5
    $ docker usermod -aG docker [myUserName]
    $ sudo reboot
    to test...
    $ sudo docker run hello-world
    ran successfully.

    Also recommended to install tools (I did this):

    $ sudo apt install apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl gnupg-agent software-properties-common

    and add repository for automatic updates (however I did not do these...):

    $ curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/docker-archive-keyring.gpg
    $ echo deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/docker-archive-keyring.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu focal stable | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list

    install Docker:
        $ apt install docker.io
    enable the service:
        sudo systemctl enable --now docker
    add our user to the "docker" group:
        $ sudo usermod -a -G docker $USER
    reboot:
    check:
        $ docker version
